From reading this research I now have a better understanding of the conventions of thriller films therefore I know what I should include in my coursework to create a thrilling opening. I now know that the main aspects of thrillers are suspense, excitement, and tension. They develop a plot until it reaches a climax whereby the lead protagonist tends to endure a life-threatening situation. Furthermore they include elements of surprise to keep viewers 'on the edge of their seats'. Stereotypes of gender are frequently used whereby males are 'tough' and women are presented as weak and reliant on males. I have also learnt that directors use lighting to create mysterious and dangerous atmospheres, therefore I may be able to use this technique in my coursework. I have also gained knowledge that thrillers have many sub-genres, for example:
- Crime Thrillers - Include ransom, revenge, and kidnappings
- Psychological Thrillers - Play 'mind games' with the audience
- Horror Thrillers - Use effective diegetic and non- diegetic sound to create suspense.
Overall I have learnt that thrillers are fast paced, exciting, action-packed and dramatic films. This means that I will have to ensure my coursework attempts to cover as many of these conventions as possible depending on the sub-genre we decide to base our coursework on.
